ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp anise seed
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup unsulfured (light) molasses
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp water
  • 2/3 cup finely chopped pecans

    Sift together dry ingredients (except sugar). Cream butter, sugar and molasses until fluffy. Beat in egg and water. Add dry ingredients until just combined. Spoon (roll?) dough ito 16 inch log. Wrap tightly and refrigerate for 1 hour.

    Unwrap log and press chopped pecan evenly into sides. Wrap and refrigerate at least 6 hours.

    Preheat oven to 350°. Slice log into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Put on greased cookie sheet. Bake until brown and firm to touch, about 16 minutes. Transfer to rack and cool. Coat with powdered sugar.
