Christmas Egg Nog

JacquelynnJacquelynn

Mom has been making this egg nog for years, and it is everyone’s favorite. More recently, this has become Angel’s nog. She has the task of putting this all together and stirring and stirring and stirring until it coats the spoon. This is one of the only recipes for egg nog that is actually cooked first.

ingredients

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2 egg whites
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Brandy or rum
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream whipped
  • Dash of nutmeg

directions

Beat 1/3 cup sugar into egg yolks. Add salt and stir in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture coats a metal spoon. (And Angel learned a hard lesson about watching and stirring constantly. She turned her back for a second and the milk scalded dry to the pot! No one really knows how she managed to do this, it was hysterical!) Cool. Beat egg whites til foamy. Gradually add 3 Tbsp. sugar, beating to soft peaks. Add to custard and mix thoroughly. Add vanilla. Chill 3-4 hours. Add brandy or rum before serving. I prefer the brandy, and mom prefers the rum. Either way, it’s delicious!

notes

Funny thing - youd think that egg nog would use a lot more eggs, so the first time I was making this I bought a dozen and a half eggs,I was shopping with mom and asked if she thought that would be enough, she said should be.I get home and find out 2 eggs!
