Made for Chris Mouzong’s Obama election party, and they were a hit.

ingredients

  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1 tsp canola oil
  • 2 tblspns sugar
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp ground red chili powder (or more to taste)

directions

  • 1

    1) Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

  • 2

    2) Spread the pecans on a cookie sheet and roast until fragrant, about 20 minutes. Stir a few times so that they color evenly.

    3) Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat, add the nuts, and stir to coat. Sprinkle with sugar and salt and cook, stirring continually, over medium heat, until the sugar melts and starts to caramelize and coat the nuts (about 5 minutes).

    4) Turn off the heat but keep stirring until the nuts begin to cool, then toss with the chili powder and turn them onto a plate to finish cooling.
