This is fun to do for a party. Set up your topping bar and have fun! The possibilities are endless.
Dough:
1 package active dry yeast
1¾ cups flour
¾ cup warm water
1½ teaspoon salt
1½ teaspoon olive oil
Homemade Tomato Sauce, follow recipe in “Everything Else” section
Choice of Toppings
Start dough by stirring yeast, 1 tbsp flour, and ¼ cup warm water in a coffee mug. Let stand for five minutes. The mixture should appear creamy.
Combine remaining flour and salt in a large bowl. Add remaining water, yeast mixture and olive oil. Work together ingredients with your hands. At this point the dough will be wet and sticky. You may have to add more flour until you are able to form a ball.
Scatter flour on your counter and knead the dough ball for eight minutes. You should have a soft and smooth dough ball. Return the ball to the bowl and cover with a towel. Let rest for one hour.
Heat gas grill to 500 degrees. Divide dough into four smaller balls and roll flat into any shape you wish. We have found it convenient to use the back side of cookie sheets for this. Once the grill is hot enough drop one of your rolled doughs onto the grates. Don’t worry, if your grill is 500 degrees, it will not fall through the grates before it cooks. Pull the dough off of the grill after two to three minutes. It should now look like a flat bread with grill marks on one side.
Top the side with the grill marks with the toppings of your choice on the side with the grill marks. You can’t go wrong with fresh mozzarella and Tina’s homemade tomato sauce recipe. Return to the grill until cheese is melted and center is warm (Approximately five minutes).
