Southern Sour Cream Cookies

A childhood memory...

  • ⅓ cup shortening

  • ⅔ cup sugar

  • 1 egg, well beaten

  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda

  • 1⅔ cups flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • ½ cup chopped nuts, optional

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

  • Work shortening with a spoon until fluffy and creamy. Gradually add ⅔ cup sugar. Add the egg and mix well. Sift the soda, flour, baking powder, and salt together, and add alternately with the sour cream. Add nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet.

  • Press each cookie somewhat flat with the bottom of a wet glass dipped in sugar. Sprinkle tops with sugar and cinnamon mixture. Bake at 400° for 8-10 minutes.

When my mother made these when I was growing up, she used to make half a batch with nuts, and half without, since my sister liked nuts but I didn't.
