Old fashioned Danish Apple Dessert.

ToveTove Wickstrom

There is as many recipe’s as there are Danish homes, this is the basic recipe, change it to fit your family. I remember as a child this was also served with the afternoon coffee on a Sunday afternoon.

ingredients

  • Apple sauce
  • 4-5 Grannie Smith apples, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 cup water or less
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla or 1 vanilla bean sliced open
  • Sugar to taste (better if tart).
  • The apple sauce should be chunky, not too sweet. Use the least amount of water so that it is a rich thick chunky apple sauce.
  • Bread crumbs
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 8 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped almonds

notes

For a fancier cake it is custom to use Danish macaroons which are crispy, sometimes soaked in cherry liquor, biscotti is another good choice.
