Gingerbread Cookies
2¾ C flour
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
½ tsp salt
½ C shortening
¼ C brown sugar
¾ C molasses
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp hot water
1 tsp vinegar
2 C powdered sugar
⅛ tsp cream of tartar
1 egg white
food coloring, if desired
Cookies
Mix all ingredients together. Make into cookies however you wish. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350* for 10 minutes.
*- As the dough sets into between baking batches, it will eat up the flour and get greasy. Add small amount of flour before cutting out each batch. This recipes also does poorly in a cookie press, for this same reason.
Icing
Beat together all ingredients. Icing should be thick enough that it does not fall off the spoon when held up. Add more sugar to thicken.
