Yule Kage
This was a favorite of theirs
ingredients
- 1/4 c. warm water (not hot 110-115 degrees)
- 1 pkg active dry yeast
- 3/4 c. lukewarm milk
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. powdered cardamon
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbs. shortening
- 1 c. candied fruit
- 1 c. raisins
- Half of 3 1/2 c. sifted Gold Medal Flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add all ingredients except half the flour. Mix with a spoon until smooth. Add rest of flour until easy to handle by hand. Turn onto lightly floured board; knead until smooth and elastic. Round up in greased bowl; cover and let rise until double in size about 1 1/2 hours. Could take longer.

Punch down and let rise again about another 45 minutes. Shape into round loaf; place in greased 8 or 9 inch round pan. Cover and let rise (45 min.). Brush with egg yolk glaze. Bake until brown.

350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Makes 1 loaf.
