Buttercream Frosting

This is perfect for frosting cakes or cookies, and yet tastes great too!

  • 1 cup butter (no substitutes), softened
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 pounds OR 10 1/2 cups confectioners’ (powdered) sugar (1 pound of sifted confectioners’ sugar = 3 1/2 cups.
  • 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • About 1/4-1/2 cup milk
  • Gel frosting colors of choice (Do NOT use liquid food coloring.)

    In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and shortening.

    Beat in sugar, vanilla, and enough milk to achieve spreading consistency.

    Put frosting in individual bowls and add desired colors.


If piping the frosting, it is best to do so in a cool house. Around 70 degrees is perfect. If it starts to get hard to work with, simply place in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes or the freezer for a few minutes to cool down.
