Brown Velvet Cupcakes with Italian Buttercream Frosting

Otherwise known as “Red Velvet”, but with more cocoa powder and no food coloring...

ingredients

Cupcakes
  • 2 1/2 cups flour or equivalent amount of cake flour (read directions on box)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Frosting
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups butter (do not substitute)
  • Number 2B icing tip and large coupler
