Dal

We enjoy spicy dal as an alternative meal. We enjoy dal with vegetable pakora and some pickles for a perfect Indian vegetarian meal.

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 C yellow onion, chopped

  • 1 tbsp ginger, grated (about 1" piece)

  • ½ tsp ground cumin

  • ½ tsp mustard seeds

  • ½ tsp turmeric

  • 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded, deveined and chopped fine

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 2 C tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 C lentils

  • 2½ C water

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp lime juice

  • 1 tbsp cilantro, chopped

  • Heat vegetable oil over medium high heat and sauté onion, ginger, spices, peppers, and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Next, add tomatoes and sauté for another minute. Add lentils, water and salt bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 35 minutes or until lentils are soft. Finally, add lime juice and cilantro, mix well and serve with hot cooked basmati rice.

notes:
