Alice's Chili
ingredients
- 2 cups chopped onion
- 1 large diced green pepper
- 1/4 cup chopped cabbage
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1.5 pounds ground beef
- 1.5 pound sausage
- 2 (1 pound) cans tomatoes
- 1 cup tomato juice
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon each: lemon juice, cumin, paprika, cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon each mustard seed, red pepper, cloves, celery seed, nutmeg
- 1 bay leaf crumbled

Combine chopped onion, green pepper, cabbage and garlic. Heat oil in skilled an saute about 5 minutes until softened.

Add ground beef and sausage to begetable mixture stirring until meat browns.

Add tomatoes, tomatoe juice, water, sugar and seasonings. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about an hour.

Add more salt or chili powder to adjust seasonings if necessary.
