Sausage Strada [with variations!]~Susan's way

ingredients

  • Approx 6 slices of bread: white, sourdough, French…your preference 1 lb pork sausage 1 tsp ground dry mustard 3/4 cup shredded cheese… cheddar, Swiss…again, your preference
  • 3 eggs 1 1/2 cups milk…whole, 1%, 2%...your choice 2/3 cup half & half cream
  • 1 “pinch” black pepper ADDITIONAL OPTIONS 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 1/2 cup shopped green peppers 1/3 cup of either: spinach, broccoli, zucchini – go green!
  • Butter the bread before adding the ingredients…highly recommend! Parsley for garnish

directions

Place bread in greased 13” x 9” x 2” baking dish/pan, set aside. In a skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Mix in mustard. Sprinkle sausage & cheese evenly over bread. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, cream, and pepper. Add any “extra” ingredients if desired. Pour over cheese & sausage layer, uncovered, bake at 350 degrees F for 25-35 minutes OR until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
