Grandmum's scones
This recipe originally came from Stewart’s mum. Lots of good memories eating these in the little kitchen in Palo Alto.
ingredients
- 7 cups flour
- 3/4 cup butter, softened
- 6 tablespoons sugar
- raisins or currants to taste
- 4 eggs, lightly beaten
- milk or sour cream as needed
directions
- 1
Sift flour into large bowl and drop in small lumps of soft butter. Using your fingers, lift and rub mixture, gently rubbing until flour and butter begin to meld. Add sugar, raisins, then eggs, then (a little at a time) add milk or sour cream to make a dough, simply pulling dough together, not compressing.
- 2
Place dough on floured board and pat into rectangle. Cut into squares, diamonds, or yo-yo sized rounds. Put scones on greased baking sheet.
- 3
Bake at 425 for 10 minutes.
- 4
Dough can be frozen after cutting, BEFORE baking. Place frozen scones in oven and bake 15 minutes at 425.
