This recipe has become a staple in our household. It celebrated election day 2008 with us, is what Rob makes when Jen is having a really awful day, and is something we come back to again and again.

ingredients

  • Chicken Tikka
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed
  • 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • Masala Sauce
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, minced (about 1 cup)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 serrano chile, ribs and seeds removed, chile minced
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp garam masala
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 chopped fresh cilantro
