ingredients

Scones
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 12 tbsp. butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk (may add additional 1/4 cup; just enough to hold dough together)
  • 3/4 cups currants (or dried cranberries)
Glaze
  • 1 tbsp. heavy cream (or half & half)
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. sugar

directions

Scones

  • 1

Preheat over to 425°. Use a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Combine dry ingredients; stir well with fork. Add butter and cut into dry mixture with a butter knife, until mixture looks like fresh bread crumbs.

  • 2

Add buttermilk and currants. Mix only until dry ingredients are moistened. Gather dough into ball and press until it holds together.

  • 3

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead lightly 12 times. Pat dough into a circle 1/2 inch thick.

  • 4

Brush dough with glaze. Place scones 1 inch apart on baking sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes, or until tops are browned. Serve hot.

Glaze

Combine in small bowl cream, cinnamon and sugar--stir to blend.
