Gingerbread Critters

A holiday classic, these are cookies that everyone will enjoy.

ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 2 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 5 tbsp. molasses
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • decorations of your choice

    Mix molasses, water, and sugars in a saucepan. Stir and heat to a boil. Add butter and stir until it melts. Turn the heat off, and let cool for 5 minutes.

    Blend dy ingredients into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour in the sugar mixture, and stir well. Cover with plastic wrap, and chill for 1 hour.

    Heat oven to 300°. Flour a surface, and knead the dough for 2 minutes. Break the dough into 2 balls. Keep the used ball in the fridge.

    Flour the surface again, and also flour a rolling pin. Roll the dough out to about 1/8" thick. Using cookie cutters or a knife, cut out the shapes that you want. Transfer your critters onto an ungreased cookie sheet. If using sprinkles, decorate. Do not use icing yet.Repeat, using all other dough. Cook for about 15-18 minutes; don’t let them turn dark.Let cool, and decorate.
