Brownies
When I was at Swedish Covenant, one of my favorite patients’ wife made these. Best basic brownies ever!
ingredients
- 2 sq. bitter chocolate
- 1/2 c. butter or margarine
- 2 eggs
- 1 c. sugar
- 3/4 c. flour
- 1 t. baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 1c. chopped nutmeats
- 1/2 t. vanilla
directions

Melt chocolate and butter over hot water or in microwave. Set aside to cool.

Beat eggs- add sugar and continue to beat well. Add cooled melted chocolate and butter.

Sift flour, baking powder adn salt together and add to above mixture. Last, add chopped nutmeats and vanilla. Bake in greased 9" sq. pan in 350 oven for 25-30 min. cool. Cut into squares. Ice with chocolate frosting if desired or sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

Make 1/2 recipe for the 9" square brownies. Full recipe for a cake.

1 lb. Confectioners powdered sugar

1/2 c. soft butter
- 4
1/8 t. salt
- 5
1 t. vanilla
- 6
3-4 T. milk
- 7
2 sq. melted baker’s chocolate
- 8
Cream one third of sugar with butter and salt. Blend vanilla, 2 T. milk, remaining sugar, and chocolate into mixture. Gradually stir remaining milk into frosting until desired spreading consistency is reached.
