Gooey Butter Cake


This is something very special to Saint Louis. For as long as I can remember, we’d head to Schnuck’s soon after we arrived at Nana and Papa’s house to get a few groceries, namely Gooey Butter Cake. We’d eat it every morning for breakfast during our stay and then take one back to Wisconsin with us when we left.

  • 1 yellow cake mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 stick of butter
  • Mix and spread in 8“ by 10” pan
  • Separately, beat:
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1 lb. of powder sugar
  • 2 eggs
Save a shopping List


Spread cream cheese mixture over the top of the cake mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely. Garnish with powder sugar and a maraschino cherry in the center.
