Everyday Biscuits
These biscuits are so hearty and grainy; we love them. Anna, Maggie & I eat them with peanut butter on day 2 -- still delicious a day old.
ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 T. sugar
- 1 T. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup shortening or butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup milk

1. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt.

2. Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center.

3. Combine egg and milk; add all at once to flour mixture. Stir mixture until dough just clings together.

4. On a lightly floured surface, knead gently about 10 to 12 strokes, roll or pat to 1/2 inch thickness.

5. Cut with 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter, dipping cutter in flour between cuts, if necessary.

6. Transfer to greased baking sheet; Bake at 375 degrees for 15 - 18 minutes or golden brown.
