Picking blueberries has been a summer tradition for generations in our family. Often Mom would take her parents to pick them. Her mother would make blueberry preserves. In New Jersey it’s the first and second week of July. When you have lots of blueberries, you make a “buckle.”

ingredients

Batter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups Heckers flour, sifted
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups blueberries
Topping
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 stick butter, room temperature

directions

  • 1

Preheat oven to 350°. Cream together sugar, egg, and butter. Add flour and baking powder, alternating with adding the milk. Add the blueberries by hand. Spoon into baking dish.

  • 2

In separate bowl, mix together sugar, cinnamon, flour, and butter into a crumbly texture.

  • 3

Add to the top of the raw batter.

  • 4

    Bake 30-35 minutes.

  • 5

    Let cool before serving.

notes

Double recipe from the start, using a 9x13 baking dish. Freezes well.
