Bread Machine Recipe for 1 1/2 lb. Challah (1 lb loaf in brackets)

ingredients

Challah
  • 2 14 tsps yeast (1 1/2t)
  • 2 3/4 + 1T bread flour (1 3/4 c + 2T)
  • 1/4 cup Honey (3T)
  • 1 tsp salt (3/4 t)
  • 3 1/2 tbsp veg oil 2T + 1t)
  • 3 egg yolks(rm temp)(2)
  • 1 cup water(warm) (2/3 c)
Glaze
  • 1 egg - beaten

    Place in bread machine in order given.

    Remove at end of dough cycle and divide in 3 equal pieces.

    Form each piece into a round pressing to break any air bubbles.

    Place on greased cookie sheet leaving room for balls to rise and cover with a clean kitchen towel.

    Let rise in warm place about 20 minutes.(Dough is ready when you press and the mark remains - if it springs back it needs to rise longer)

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll each piece into a rope - braid ropes tother pinching ends to seal and tuck ends under.

    Place on baking sheet - brush with glaze and let rise again until doubled - approx. 30 minutes

    Bake 30 minutes (or less depending on your oven) Ready when top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let cool before slicing.
