ingredients

  • 3 packages rising yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 T flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk, scalded
  • 3/4 cup butter, melted
  • 5 egg yolks and 1 whole egg
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 T vanilla
  • 1 t orange rind
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups seedless white raisins
  • Topping (optional)

    Dissolve yeast in water, add sugar and flour. Set aside to let rise. Scald milk, add melted butter. Let cool. Beat egg yolks and whole egg until thick and lemon colored. Add salt, sugar, vanilla and rind. Set aside. Start adding flour to cooled milk, ixing after each cup, then add the egg mixture, then the yeast mixture, with raisins last.

    Knead until dough gets smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased large pan. Let rise in a warm place until double in bulk. Divide dough into four greased bread pans and let rise until doubled. Brush dough with lightly beaten egg yolk with a little water. Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
