Greek Twists

Makes 3 dozen cookies

ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

    Beat butter and sugar in an electric mixer until creamy. Add egg yolks. Add lemon juice and flavorings. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together and add gradually to butter mixture. Gather in a ball and chill in refrigerator until firmer.

    Pinch off 1” balls of dough and roll into 8” strands. Bring ends together and twist. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Use pastry brush to paint each cookie with a mixture of egg yolk mixed with a little water. Sprinkle each cookie with sesame seeds and bake in a 350°F. oven for about 17 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to rack, cool and store in an airtight container.
