Old Fashioned Sugar Cutout Cookies
ingredients
- 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup softened butter or margarine
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla

Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg and set aside.

In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, and egg until light and fluffy at medium speed. At low speed, beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add flour mixture. Beat until well combined with a rubber spatula and form dough into a ball. Wrap in waxed paper or foil and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Divide dough into 4 parts. Refrigerate until ready to roll out. Preheat oven to 375. On a well floured surface, roll dough one part at a time to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies with a floured 2 1/2 inch cutter and place them 2 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle tops with sugar. Reroll trimmings. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden.
