ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg (2 small)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

    Sift all dry ingredients into a bowl.

    Cream shortening with sugar until fluffy. Beat in molasses, egg and vanilla.

    Put dry mixture into wet mixture 1/3 at a time and mix well.

    Put into a glass bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Chill overnight (min 4 hours). Dough may also be frozen for later use in freezer bags wrapped in aluminum foil. Let thaw in the bags.

    Roll dough out on a lightly floured board to 1/3 inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. If dough becomes difficult to move, re-chill.

    Bake cookies in preheated oven at 350°F for 8 min and cool on the cookie sheet to prevent breakage.
