Gingerbread Cutouts
These beautifully decorated cutouts have become a favorite tray topper. What would Christmas be without a little gingerbread?
ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Beat shortening with an electric mixer for 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking powder, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves; beat till combined. Beat in molasses, egg, and vinegar till combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour with a wooden spoon. Divide dough in half; cover and chill for 3 hours or till easy to handle.

Roll one portion of dough at a time on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cutouts 1 inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375° oven for 5 to 6 minutes or till edges are lightly browned. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Removes and cool on wire racks. Decorate.
