Makes 6 servings
RobinRobin Hughes

Another great one for Christmas morning. Make the night before and pop in the oven in the morning.

ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 Tab. water
  • 2 green apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 12-14 slices firm white bread
  • 5 eggs, well beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 Tabs. vanilla extract

directions

  • 1

Heat brown sugar and butter until melted in a frying pan.

  • 2

    Add apples, water and cinnamon.

  • 3

Cook until apples are slightly soft and sugar foamy.

  • 4

Pour in to a 9x13 baking dish.

  • 5

    LET COOL

  • 6

When cool, overlap bead in two rows on apple mixture.

  • 7

Mix beaten eggs, milk and vanilla. Pour over bread.

  • 8

Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.

  • 9

Bake at 350 for 40 minutes, covering the last 15 minutes if bread is browning too quickly.

  • 10

Cut and invert servings so apples are on top. You can serve with syrup, but it really does not need it.

notes

I got this recipe form my mother-in-law, Janet Hughes, who got it at a Child and Family Services brunch.
