Christmas Casserole
We eat this every Christmas morning and I love it!
ingredients
- 1 teaspoon + 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 12 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
- 1-2 cups Jimmy Dean sausage (cooked)
- 2 cups shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon flat leaf parsley, minced
- 1 loaf white bread (quality brand or french bread), crust removed, cubed
- Any of the following:
- Green onion, chopped
- Red/Green peppers, chopped

Grease a casserole dish with a teaspoon of butter.

In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, cayenne, salt and pepper.

In a small bowl toss meat, onions, parsley, peppers.

Layer in the casserole dish:

Cheese, 1/3 of bread, 1/2 of meat mixture, Cheese, bread, meat, etc.

Pour egg mixture over all layers, gently press down. (Make sure the top layer is moistened.)

Melt remaining butter and drizzle over it.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate over night.

Next day, bake uncovered at 350 until golden brown and slightly puffed (about 45-55 min).

Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

We use 2 cups half/half rather than milk and cream
