Grandma's Baked Onions

Grandma Anderson’s baked onions. These are a standard holiday dish out on the farm - sliced onions and cheesy deliciousness is hard to go wrong with. This year, I finally got her to give me the recipe!

Ingredients

  • 8 cups sliced onions
  • 10 Tbs butter
  • 4 Tbs flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • salt and pepper
  • thinly sliced (velveta) cheddar cheese
  • wheat germ

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

    Saute the onions in 6 Tbs of the butter until they’re limp. Use the remainder of the butter, flour, milk, and mustard to make a white sauce.

    Grease a 2 quart baking pan. Put a layer of the onions in the bottom of the pan, followed by a layer of the white sauce. Continue until both are used up. Place the sliced cheese and sprinkle the top with wheat germ. Bake for 30-45 minutes.
