ingredients

  • 1 lb. pitted dates
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts, chopped
  • 4oz. candied citron
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 square chocolate, melted
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • 1/2 cup pineapple preserves

directions

Grease 15x10x1-inch jelly roll pan, line with brown paper, then grease again. Mix dates, walnuts, and chopped citron. Sift flour with baking powder and spices. In large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light. Beat in eggs until fluffy. Add chocolate and molasses; blend well. Add flour mixture; beat until smooth. With spoon, stir in fruit and nut mix. Gradually stir in bourbon; blend well. Stir in preserves. Spread into pan. Bake 45-50 minutes. Cool. Wrap in plastic. To serve, frost and cut into bars. Will keep in refrigerator for several weeks.
