Gladys Crehore's Date Nut Bread
“If you are ever asked to make something for a church picnic or a cooked food sale make a date nut loaf. They sell like hot cakes. They are so easy.”
ingredients
- 1 cup dates, chopped
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
directions
Pour boiling water over dates, soda, butter and sugar and beat well. Add egg. Mix well. Have dry ingredients mixed together and add them next. Add flavoring and nuts. Bake in a loaf pan in a medium oven (350 F.) for one hour or until done. Put greased paper in the bottom of the pan so it won’t stick.
notes
"Saturday morning I got up and made four date nut loaves and gave away three. They must have been good because everyone wants the recipe. I am sending it to you. Bill will probably like to try his hand. They are so easy to make and so good".
