30 min
total time:
1 hr

  • 2 cups brown sugar, packed

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 12 ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup sliced almonds, divided (optional)

  • 1

    Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Set aside 2 tablespoons of the butter. Beat the remaining butter in a large mixing bowl on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add brown sugar and beat until combined. Beat in eggs and 2 teaspoons of the vanilla.

  • 3

Stir together flour and baking soda in a separate large bowl. Stir in oats.

Press two-thirds (about 3 cups) of the oat mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 15.5x10.5x1 inch jelly roll pan. Spread chocolate mixture over the oats mixture. Using your fingers, dot remaining oats mixture over the chocolate. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup almonds (optional).

Bake about 25 minutes until top is lightly browned (chocolate mixture will still look moist). Cool in pan on a wire rack, then cut into 2x1-inch bars and serve.

This is one of our favorite recipes, especially at Christmastime. They store wonderfully and are delicious. Almonds can be easily omitted and will not even be missed!
