Orange Treasure Bars

Moist, old-fashioned date bar, accented with orange peel and buttery orange frosting.

ingredients

  • BARS:
  • 8 oz. pkg. chopped dates
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 T grated orange peel
  • FROSTING:
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup softened butter
  • 3 T milk
  • 1 T grated orange peel

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    Grease 15 x 10 inch jelly roll pan. (I double recipe and use a 9 x 13 inch cake pan).

    In heavy 3 quart saucepan, combine dates, sugar and butter.

    Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until dates are softened (5 to 8 minutes).

    Remove from heat.

  • 6

    Add remaining ingredients.

    By hand, stir until well-mixed (1 to 2 minutes).

    Spread into greased pan.

    Bake near center of oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

    Cool completely; spread with frosting.

    Cut into bars.

    FROSTING:

    In 1 1/2 quart mixing bowl combine all frosting ingredients. Beat at medium speed, scraping sides of bowl often, until light and fluffy (1 to 2 minutes).
