  • 1 Tbsp whole spices
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 onion - sliced
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp butter
  • 1 cup (or more) vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • salt & pepper

notes

For "whole spices" I used pickling spice as that blend has many of the spices used in traditional saurbraten (coriander, allspice, cloves, bay leaf, etc)
