Date Swirls

ingredients

  • 1/2 lb chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • dash salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup firm packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten

directions

Combine 1st 4 ingredients in a saucepan and mix well. Cook for 5 min. Remove from heat, add nuts, mix well. Set aside to cool. Sift together next 4 ingredients. Cream butter with brown sugar and white sugar until light and fluffy. Add dry ingredients, mix well and chill. Turn chilled dough onto a floured board. Roll into rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Spread cooled date mixture on dough. Roll up jelly roll style. Wrap tightly in waxed paper and chill several hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut into 1/4 slices. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake 10 - 12 minutes till golden brown.
